About This Coffee

Formally established in 2015, the Norcafe Cooperative was created by a group of university students who were the children of smallholder coffee farmers and wanted to see the lives of coffee farmers improve. Their strategy was continuous improvements in production and quality. They started with with 100 farming families in the Amazonas highlands of northern Peru. Today, nearly 500 families growing coffee on a total of 1,200 hectares of land above 1,400 meters belong to the cooperative and several are producing award winning coffees. Almost half of the members are women.

The Swiss Water® Process uses pure green coffee extract and proprietary carbon technology to remove caffeine from green coffee beans. Swiss Water® has specified the pore size of the carbon to match the caffeine molecule to ensure only the caffeine is trapped when the caffeine is captured from the green coffee extract.

History of Coffee in Peru

In 1897 the Belgian consul in Lima Peru wrote a report that “the coffee of Peru is delicious,” there was every reason to believe he was right. That same year, coffee exports had reached well over 20,000 bags, almost triple the 7,000 bags exported in 1894. But the turn of the century would prove to be a peak for that generation of Peruvian coffee exports. By 1913, exports had dropped back down to 9,000 bags. It would have been difficult to imagine on the eve of WWI that for most of the next 100 years Peru would be numbered among the top 10 coffee producing countries in the world, and even rise to the number 5 spot a few times. Looking back, it's not only easy to understand why, but easy to imagine increasing success in producing specialty coffee as a leading supplier of organic coffee.

Growing Coffee in Peru

Peru is made up of a wide variety of landscapes, from long beaches to high mountains, from the desert to the largest rain forest. In the north, the second highest mountain rage, the Andes, goes through Cajamarca department and converges with the Amazon, creating complex and diverse orographies and microclimates. Cajamarca’s inter-Andean valleys have hosted coffee crops for more than 200 years and concentrate almost 43% of the total Peruvian coffee production, not only because of its vast lands but because of an ancient coffee tradition that goes back to the XVIII century, when the first coffee crops were brought in and started to be nurtured by the many generations of producers in the region. Coffee has been part of their lives for so long that their inhabitants’ experiences and learnings are inextricably linked to it.

Canada Post Strike

Canada Post has started a National strike.  They will not be accepting parcels during this time but will keep any parcels that are on their way safe.

We are still accepting orders and are attempting to ship orders for free over $100*.  This is getting more and more difficult as other carriers such as Purolator are no longer accepting more parcels into their system.  Please ensure that your home address and not P.O. Box are used in your shipping address. We are currently using UPS and few smaller carriers for our free shipping options.  Most locations we have been able to find ways to ship your orders but if this is not the case we will contact you and try to work to find a solution.

If you wish, you can still choose the Canada Post shipping option and we will hold the orders until the strike is finished and ship them at that time.

We are sorry about this inconvenience and appreciate your continued business.
