A third-generation producer, Kefiyalew Mekuria continues his family legacy on the 2.2 ha. farm he inherited from his father. In 2019, Kefiyalew began processing cherry on-site instead of selling his coffee to local mills. By managing the drying process himself, Kefiyalew was able to improve the value of his lots and overall income. At the current time, Kefiyalew produces around 40 bags of exportable coffee annually. The high elevation of his property, buoyed by nutrient-rich soil, creates an ideal setting for the cultivation of high-quality specialty offerings.

Kefiyalew carefully selects ripe cherry, which he then spreads out in a single layer on raised drying beds. Cherry is raked every hour to ensure an even dry. Protected throughout the process, Kefiyalew covers his coffee at midday during peak sun and at night to prevent condensation. Once dried, coffee is stored at the warehouse on Kefiyalew’s farm for 2.5 months before transportation to Addis Ababa for dry milling and export.

My Favorite Supplier of Green Coffee

I love Pre-Umber. They have a good selection of green coffee beans that changes but beans are often in stock for long enough to reorder a favourite or to order beans from a familiar farm/co-op. I like that Pre-Umber supports organic coffee, small growers and co-ops, farms run by families and women, rainforest coffee, and growers that give back to the community in terms of things like schools.

I really appreciate that Pre-Umber sometimes has beans for me to explore and compare such as the same type of bean from the same farm but processed differently (e.g. wet, dry, honey, extended fermentation).

Pre-Umber fills my order extremely quickly (usually same day I order) and because I always order more than $100 worth of beans I get free shipping by Canada Post with tracking.

Pre-Umber has been my exclusive supplier of green coffee beans since 2020. Orders always arrive in under a week of ordering. I am still exploring, so I tend to order a variety of beans. I like that Pre-Umber has a good selection of beans available across a wide range of prices but with a lot in the under $20/pound range, and that information about each bean is posted so I have a basis for choosing.

Thank you Jonathan and Meghan!
